~ No previous experience required, for all levels from beginners to professionals

In this workshop we will learn:

  • Essential elements for playing a variety of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean Frame Drums: with nothing added, with jingles, and with rings
  • Key patterns which are common to many kinds of Middle Eastern rhythms and percussion instruments
  • Efficient technique which empowers you to play tirelessly for many hours
  • Journey between the hidden realm of vibration and the manifest world of sound through movement, voice, and the Frame Drum.

Please bring with you:

  • Your own Frame Drum, shaker, and recording device
  • Notebook and pencils
  • A song you love, which you would like to sing and accompany yourself with Frame Drum. (Please bring a CD and written words.) Please let us know if you do not have a drum, we will provide you with a drum.

Vasilis Papanikolaou was born in Arta, Greece in 1968. In parallel with his career as a musician, Vasilis is also a highly acclaimed painter who has shown his work in four exclusive gallery exhibits as well as many group shows. Vasilis is the recipient of many international awards for his paintings. With a recently released solo CD, Vasilis performs with musicians in Greece as well as in other countries. Vasilis lives and works in Athens.

Ο Βασίλης Παπανικολάου γεννήθηκε το 1968 στην Άρτα. Παράλληλα με τη δραστηριότητά του ως μουσικός, δραστηριοποιείται ενεργά στο χώρο των εικαστικών τεχνών, έχοντας στο ενεργητικό του 4 ατομικές εκθέσεις, καθώς και πλήθος ομαδικών. Με ένα προσωπικό δίσκο στο ενεργητικό του, έχει συνεργαστεί με μουσικούς από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Ζεί και εργάζεται στην Άθηνα.

Rowan Storm is recognized internationally for her command of traditional Middle Eastern percussion instruments, Frame Drum workshops and Carpet Concerts, and singing in several languages. Rowan has been living in Greece since 1993, where she is a leader in the contemporary movement to embrace shared Oriental heritage. Her performance venues include New York City’s Lincoln Center, celebrated venues throughout Europe, ancient amphitheaters of Greece and Cyprus, Istanbul’s Reshid Rey Concert Hall, as well as universities, museums and concert halls throughout the world.

Rowan has been living in Greece since 1993, where she is a leader in the contemporary movement to embrace shared Oriental heritage.
